A Wendy's location in Edmond, Oklahoma, has brought back the T-Rex burger challenge, offering customers the chance to consume a 3,000-calorie, nine-patty cheeseburger within a nine-minute time limit. Successful participants receive a T-shirt and a special prize.
The burger, priced at $29.99, is advertised with the slogan "Think you can take down the T-Rex? Prove it." The promotion, initially spotted on Reddit in early September, has garnered mixed reactions online. Some commenters expressed disgust and concern over the burger's nutritional content, while others were eager to take on the challenge.
An employee at the Edmond franchise indicated that the promotion was slated to expand to Wendy's locations across Oklahoma starting September 10. The accompanying prize is reportedly a voucher for a free meal, and the challenge specifically excludes the fries and drink that come with the burger.
The T-Rex burger has a history dating back to the mid-2000s, originating as a joke in Sports Illustrated. It gained notoriety when a Wendy's franchise in Brandon, Manitoba, began offering it, eventually going viral. Wendy's corporate reportedly intervened in 2013, putting a stop to the official offering due to the obvious health concerns.
Despite its discontinuation, the T-Rex burger persisted as an unofficial menu item. Customers could reportedly recreate it by ordering a Dave's Triple burger and requesting six additional patties. Dietitians suggest that while such novelty items are about the experience, sharing the burger and balancing the rest of one's diet with healthy foods is advisable if one chooses to partake.
