Welsh Council Leader Resigns After Conference Incident

Steve Hunt, the leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, has resigned from his position following an incident at a Welsh Local Government Association conference where he allegedly became heavily intoxicated. Hunt stated he should have exercised better judgment after becoming "intoxicated" at the event.

Hunt, who led the council's Independent and Plaid Cymru coalition since the 2022 local elections, apologized for his behavior, attributing it partly to "personal circumstances" and the "significant level of pressure and responsibility" associated with his role. He described the conference as an opportunity to "switch off" from these pressures, admitting, "Regrettably, I drank far beyond what was sensible."

During the conference, Hunt allegedly made a remark about wanting to "wipe out" the Welsh political party Plaid Cymru. He characterized this comment as "banter" and a "political statement" rather than a genuine threat, emphasizing his support for the Welsh language. He has since apologized to the Plaid Cymru group leader for the remark.

A spokesperson for Neath Port Talbot Council confirmed that a new leader will be appointed on October 14. Hunt will continue to serve as an independent councilor for the Crynant, Onllwyn and Seven Sisters ward.

This development follows the 2022 local elections, which marked the first time in Neath Port Talbot's history that the Labour Party lost control of the council. Hunt stated his decision to step down was made in the "best interests" of the council and the residents it serves.
