Wells Fargo Fires Student Accused in Cornell Gang Rape Case

Wells Fargo has fired Diego Sarabia, one of seven Cornell University students facing renewed scrutiny over allegations of a gang rape and drugging of a former student in 2024. Sarabia, who had been employed at the bank's Charlotte branch since 2022, lost his job following the announcement Monday that the Tompkins County District Attorney's Office has reopened its investigation into the incident.
Sarabia is among the group referred to as the "Cornell 7," named in a civil suit filed by an accuser identified as Jane Doe. The suit alleges that Doe was drugged and sexually assaulted for several hours by multiple individuals at the Chi Phi fraternity house in October 2024. Doe reportedly had been drinking at a local bar, despite being underage, before going to the fraternity house.
Initially, the District Attorney's Office had not pursued charges. However, the DA announced this week that the investigation has been reopened and that findings will be presented to a grand jury.
The civil suit against the fraternity members claims Doe was given a prescription anesthetic before the alleged assault. The reopening of the criminal investigation and Sarabia's subsequent termination from Wells Fargo indicate a significant development in the case.
