Consumers seeking popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro and Wegovy may be overpaying by thousands of pounds due to significant price variations among online pharmacies, according to a report from SlimrChat, a website dedicated to weight-loss drug information.
While these drugs are available on the NHS for individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or higher, those with a BMI of 30 or more typically must purchase them privately. The average 18-month treatment plan can cost approximately £5,360 for Mounjaro and £3,555 for Wegovy through private channels. However, patients who do not compare prices could end up spending considerably more.
Robert Price, founder of SlimrChat, discovered that some pharmacies charge substantially higher prices for the same medications. His analysis found that a 76-week course of Mounjaro, for example, was priced at £4,656 from one online pharmacy, Dotor, while another, Treated UK, offered the same course for £8,069, a difference of over 53% or £3,413. For Wegovy, the lowest price found was £2,418 from Medicine Market Place, compared to £6,144 from AJ Hill Aesthetics, an excess of £3,726.
Price attributes these price variances to fierce competition in the lucrative market for weight-loss drugs. He warns that these disparities are likely to increase as manufacturers, such as Eli Lilly for Mounjaro, prepare to launch new weight-loss pills.
Navigating Pharmacy Pricing
Online pharmacies often do not clearly display the total cost of treatment. Customers typically begin with a consultation where they provide health information for a prescriber's review. Some pharmacies may only advertise the price for the initial, lower dose, failing to mention that costs increase as the dosage is gradually raised throughout the treatment.
To address this, Price developed a free calculator on the SlimrChat website. This tool tracks prices from over 100 UK online pharmacies and clinics registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council. It allows users to estimate the total cost of a year-long or 76-week treatment plan, based on their projected dosage progression. The calculator's data is updated twice weekly, and users can input their specific treatment timeline to find the most cost-effective options.
Factors Affecting Treatment Cost
The typical weight-loss drug regimen involves starting with a low dose and increasing it gradually every four weeks. Price's calculator demonstrates how sticking to the cheapest provider for each dose can lead to significant savings. For instance, a patient following a specific Mounjaro dosage increase plan could pay £4,655.54 over 18 months with the cheapest provider, versus higher amounts elsewhere.
While switching providers regularly can offer savings, it also presents an administrative burden. Patients must undergo new consultations, provide treatment history, and report any side effects. Some individuals may prefer to remain with a single supplier for consistency, even if it means a slightly higher overall cost.
The calculator also includes options to filter pharmacies by customer ratings, such as those with over 4.5 stars on Trustpilot, and excludes providers that hide pricing details behind login portals.
Avoiding Introductory Offers
Many pharmacies offer introductory discounts, such as 10% off the first purchase or a fixed monetary amount off. However, Price advises caution, as these initial savings can be misleading. Pharmacies offering such deals may have higher overall prices, potentially costing patients more in the long run. He emphasizes that consumers should consider the total treatment cost rather than being swayed by upfront incentives.
