Wedding Guests Use Chairs to Prevent Venue Flooding During Storm
Attendees took immediate action to divert rainwater from a Sydney venue during a severe thunderstorm.
Quick-thinking wedding guests intervened to prevent a reception venue from flooding during a severe thunderstorm and hailstorm in Sydney. On Saturday, October 3, attendees used chairs to prop up a sagging tent ceiling, diverting rainwater and averting a potential flood.
The storm brought heavy hail and a significant amount of rain, leading the NSW State Emergency Service to respond to over 180 calls for assistance across the region. Videos of the incident, showing guests actively managing the situation, circulated online.
The unconventional solution drew a range of reactions from social media users. Some questioned the choice of venue or timing, with one user commenting, "Maybe take a look at the weather forecast before doing a wedding." Others suggested the event should have had an indoor backup plan. "This is why, when you’re planning a wedding at a venue, you need to make sure there’s both an outdoor space and an indoor option as a Plan B," one critic noted.
Despite the dramatic weather, some social media users offered encouragement, with one remarking, "That’s the spirit. Rain, hail or shine, the show must go on." Another user humorously added, "Brings wedding crashing to a whole new level."
Traditionally, rain on a wedding day is considered a symbol of good luck. The guests' resourceful actions ensured the celebration could continue despite the severe weather, allowing the couple to proceed with their wedding day.
