Wayne Rooney Reflects on 'Horrendous' Acting in Infamous Wine Advertisement

Former footballer Wayne Rooney expressed embarrassment about his acting performance in a 2011 television advertisement for the wine brand Casillero del Diablo. The advert, which featured Rooney alongside Manchester United teammates Ryan Giggs and Patrice Evra, promoted the wine as a new "devil" arriving at the club.

Appearing on the Capital Breakfast radio show, Rooney, 40, recalled the ad, admitting, "Yeah. Oh, some of them are terrible. The red wine one, oh it is shocking." He recounted a snippet from the commercial where he dramatically states, "Guys, we have a problem. The boss said that new devil is arriving.... They say he is a legend." Rooney described his discomfort with wearing a suit and the scene where he looked out a window, rubbing his chin, a gesture he felt was unconvincing. "I went and watched the final thing, but it was too late. It was already out and it was horrendous," he stated.

Rooney and his wife, Coleen, are currently promoting their new Disney+ docuseries, "The Real Rooneys." The series offers a look inside their £20 million mansion in Cheshire, which they built on 50 acres of farmland and completed in 2022. Coleen described the home, where they live with their four sons—Kai, Klay, Kit, and Cass—as "everything that I have dreamed of since I was a little girl."

The mansion includes amenities such as a cinema, indoor swimming pool, an underground spa, a wine cellar, and a football pitch. Wayne Rooney noted that his own contributions to the house's design were minimal, primarily requesting a small, windowless room for gaming and a snooker table. Coleen focused on securing a large dressing room, though she conceded it ended up being smaller than initially desired.

The couple has personalized the home with family portraits, souvenirs, and a statue of Wayne celebrating a goal. Coleen mentioned that despite its size, she sometimes loses track of their children within the extensive property. Rooney reflected on their journey from their upbringing in Croxteth to their current luxurious lifestyle, expressing a sense of disbelief at their current circumstances.
