Wayne Rooney Recalls Playing Through Extreme Pain for Manchester United

Wayne Rooney, the former Manchester United captain, has shared accounts of the extreme measures he undertook to play for the club, including enduring significant pain and undergoing injections to participate in matches. Rooney, now 40, was renowned for his resilience and determination during his playing career.

In an interview on the "Stick to United" podcast, Rooney recounted a specific incident involving a Champions League match against Bayern Munich in 2010. He explained that he arrived at Old Trafford on crutches but was ultimately persuaded by then-manager Sir Alex Ferguson to take pain-killing injections to play. Rooney stated, "Fergie asked me to inject it to play. I injected it, I had to come off at half time. Took my boot off at half time and my ankle had gone up like that."

Rooney also addressed current Manchester United injury concerns and player management, particularly in relation to Bruno Fernandes' minor persistent issue. He expressed understanding for players who wish to play every game, drawing a parallel to his own mentality. "He strikes me as someone who wants to play every game, I was exactly the same," Rooney said. He suggested that managing injuries is common in the Premier League and that players wanting to play is a positive trait, especially with the advent of competitions like the Nations League offering opportunities for players to miss games when necessary.

Manchester United is currently dealing with a number of injuries, affecting players such as Benjamin Sesko, Kobbie Mainoo, and Marcus Rashford, alongside Fernandes' ongoing knock. These issues are a concern for manager Michael Carrick, whose team has had a difficult start to the season with only one victory in their opening matches.

Rooney also commented on the allegations against Manchester City and the potential for retrospective title awards. Reflecting on the 2009-2010 season, where his team narrowly missed out on the Premier League title, Rooney stated he would not feel comfortable accepting a medal if Manchester City were stripped of theirs. He believes his team did not do enough that season to deserve the title, having lost a significant lead late in the campaign. He empathized with Manchester City players who might be devastated if they were found to have won titles under false pretenses, but maintained that he would not want a medal he felt his team had not earned on the pitch.
