Wayne Carey Departs Sam Newman's Podcast Amidst Controversy
Podcast host Sam Newman revealed that co-host Wayne Carey has stopped appearing on their show due to discomfort with discussing sensitive topics that resurface Carey's past.
Former AFL star Wayne Carey has ceased co-hosting Sam Newman's podcast, "You Cannot Be Serious," with Newman stating that Carey has become uncomfortable with discussions that draw renewed attention to his personal controversies. Newman indicated that the fallout from a segment discussing convicted rapist Ralph Carr was a significant factor in Carey's decision to step away.
Newman, who continues to host the podcast with Richard Wolstencroft, explained that Carey, also known as "The Duck," initially agreed to openly address their respective past issues. However, Newman observed that Carey grew increasingly reluctant to engage when conversations risked scrutinizing his own history, which includes a 1997 indecent assault conviction and his controversial departure from the North Melbourne Football Club in 2002.
Newman suggested that Carey's desire to improve his public image and focus on his current life, including his young family, clashed with the podcast's format. He described media coverage of Carey's interventions on controversial topics as often leading to renewed scrutiny of his past.
The flashpoint appears to have been Newman's comments regarding Ralph Carr's rape conviction. Newman had questioned the evidence and suggested the victim might have experienced "buyer's remorse" in relation to the case, a statement which led to backlash. Carey had advised Newman against offering opinions based solely on media reports, stating he himself did not have an opinion.
Newman defended his remarks about Carr, clarifying that he was questioning the circumstances of the case rather than defending Carr himself, and interpreted "buyer's remorse" as a poor decision-making process. Wolstencroft also commented that discussing controversial subjects is inherent to the podcast's nature.
Newman stated that while Carey remains a friend, the podcast partnership has concluded. He indicated that future episodes might minimize or move controversial political discussions to the end of the program and expressed his expectation that Wolstencroft would continue to challenge him during discussions.
