A Washington mother has come forward with an account of encountering an adult male showering in the women's locker room at the Lynnwood Recreation Center near Seattle on July 12. The incident, which occurred during a children's swim meet, has sparked renewed debate about access to sex-segregated facilities.
Maria Varchetto, whose daughter was participating in the swim meet, stated that she entered the women's locker room to use the restroom and observed an adult male showering. She described the locker room as having an open shower area and private stalls with curtains. Varchetto reported that the curtains were not fully enclosing and that the individual's exposed genitals were visible.
After using the restroom, Varchetto encountered the same individual and stated that the genitals were again plainly visible. She then informed the person that it was the women's locker room. According to Varchetto, the individual did not respond. She subsequently reported the incident to the front desk.
Management intervened and spoke with the individual, who identified as transgender. "The manager addressed the individual and said, 'Excuse me, are you confused? This is the women's locker room.' The individual responded only with, 'I'm trans,'" Varchetto recounted. The manager reportedly left after the exchange.
Varchetto expressed that the experience has made her hesitant to allow her daughter to use the women's locker room alone and that her daughter now prefers using the limited family locker rooms, which are often in high demand.
Nathan MacDonald, manager of communications and public affairs for the City of Lynnwood, confirmed that recreation center staff received a complaint about a "self-identifying trans woman" using a shower stall in the women's locker room. He stated that the facility's practices comply with Washington Administrative Code 162-32-060, which mandates that entities allow individuals to use gender-segregated facilities corresponding to their gender expression or identity.
Following the incident, the City of Lynnwood's facilities team installed new, full-sized shower curtains in the locker rooms and is considering further modifications to enhance patron privacy.
