Washington D.C. is currently experiencing record-setting heat as the "A Capitol Fourth" concert is set to take place on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for the region, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 105 degrees Fahrenheit and a heat index climbing to 112 degrees.
Gates for the concert opened at 7 p.m. Eastern Time to minimize the time spectators spend outdoors. U.S. Capitol Police advised attendees to bring ample water and limit other items to expedite security screening.
"A Capitol Fourth" has been an annual tradition since 1980, with the exception of 2020 and 2021 when performances were pre-recorded due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The concert, featuring military bands and special guests, will be broadcast on PBS and online, allowing those who prefer to avoid the extreme weather to watch from home.
The event is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. Organizers are prioritizing attendee safety amidst the dangerous heat conditions.
