Washburn University head coach Brett Ballard sustained serious injuries Tuesday night when his pickup truck veered off Interstate 470 in Topeka and struck a concrete bridge pillar. The crash occurred just after 8:15 p.m. as Ballard was traveling westbound in his 2024 Ford F-150.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the vehicle left the left side of the roadway, hit a delineator post, and then entered a steep embankment before colliding with the pillar. Ballard was the sole occupant of the truck and was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the incident. Emergency services transported him to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka.
Washburn University President JuliAnn Mazachek released a statement expressing the community's concern. "We are deeply saddened to share that Coach Brett Ballard was seriously injured in a car accident last evening," Mazachek said. "Our hearts are with Coach Ballard, his family, the men's basketball program and all who are affected during this difficult time."
Ballard, 46, has been a prominent figure in Kansas basketball for years. A native of Hutchinson, he played guard for the Kansas Jayhawks from 2000 to 2002 under coach Roy Williams. He later served as an assistant coach for seven seasons on Bill Self's staff.
For the past nine seasons, Ballard has led the Washburn Ichabods, establishing the program as a consistent force in NCAA Division II. He has accumulated a record of 198-81, guiding the team to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances and making them a perennial contender in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA). Prior to his tenure at Washburn, Ballard also held head coaching positions at Baker University, where he achieved a conference regular-season championship and an appearance in the NAIA national tournament.
His coaching success has earned him respect throughout Kansas's basketball community. As news of the accident spread, messages of support and well wishes for his recovery have been shared by fans and colleagues. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, and authorities have not yet released further details.
