Warriors Rookie Admits Trash Talk With Luka Doncic Went 'Overboard'

Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg acknowledged that his vocal exchanges with Lakers star Luka Doncic during his NBA debut may have crossed a line. Lendeborg, tasked with guarding Doncic on Opening Night, engaged in persistent trash talk with the Slovenian guard throughout the game.

"I’m not afraid to talk to nobody. He’s not Michael Jordan," Lendeborg stated after the game. However, he later conceded, "I feel like I did kinda take it overboard in the media, but it is what it is."

The rookie's comments to the media extended beyond his in-game interactions. Following the Warriors' season-opening loss to the Lakers, Lendeborg expressed a loss of respect for Doncic due to his perceived complaining.

"Being in there firsthand, just watching all the whining and complaining, I lost all respect, man," Lendeborg said. "Like, me getting frustrated, it’s not about the foul getting called. It’s about him complaining the entire game. Then you get the foul called — congratulations, bro — and you talk to me like you did something great? That’s just weak. It kind of threw me off for a while. Because like I said, I had so much respect for him. Gone, man."

Despite Lendeborg's spirited defense and vocal challenges, Doncic led the Lakers to a victory, scoring a game-high 28 points, along with seven assists and eight rebounds. The matchup provided a notable welcome to the league for the Warriors rookie.
