The Golden State Warriors' pursuit of LeBron James in free agency has encountered a significant obstacle, with NBA insider Shams Charania stating that the team's inability to acquire Anthony Davis could hinder their chances of signing James.
Charania noted during a July 3 appearance on ESPN's "Get Up" podcast that the Warriors' initial plan was to land both James and Davis in a package deal. Without Davis, the Warriors are reportedly not considered among the top contenders for James's services, despite his potential desire to play alongside Stephen Curry.
"The Warriors, going into free agency, they dreamt up a grand plan of Draymond Green, Stephen Curry, LeBron James," Charania said. "The big domino with them is trying to get a player like an Anthony Davis, so you can bring in LeBron James and Anthony Davis as a package deal. Short of that, they're not really looked at right now at the top of this list."
James informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he would be signing elsewhere in free agency this offseason, immediately leading to speculation about the Warriors being a prime destination. However, the prospect of a reunion with his former Lakers teammate Davis appears to be fading.
The Washington Wizards, who currently hold Davis's contract through next season, have indicated they have no intention of trading him. This stance presents a challenge to Golden State's strategy.
Despite this setback, Charania acknowledged that the NBA free agency landscape is fluid. "So much has changed, right? There's fluidity that comes with it, with information. A few days ago, the [76ers] didn't have Jaylen Brown. So now they do… So now they have to be on the radar of LeBron James," he added, highlighting how quickly situations can evolve.
Other teams, including the Cavaliers and the Heat, are mentioned as known factors in the free agency process for James. The report suggests that while the Warriors' path to acquiring James has become more complicated without a Davis acquisition, circumstances in free agency can change rapidly.
