Warriors Prep for Lakers, Unveiling New Offensive System and Rookie Threat
Golden State returns home after a productive training camp in Hawaii, ready to integrate a revamped offense and showcase rookie Yaxel Lendeborg against Los Angeles.
The Golden State Warriors are set to host the Los Angeles Lakers at Chase Center on Tuesday night, marking their first home game since the conclusion of last season. This preseason matchup will offer a glimpse into the team's adjusted offensive strategy and the emergence of rookie Yaxel Lendeborg.
Following a week-long training camp in Oahu, which included five practices and an exhibition loss to the Clippers, the Warriors are focused on building momentum. Coach Steve Kerr described the Hawaii trip as "overall, a really good week," emphasizing the need to "build on it."
Evolving the Offense
The team is transitioning to a five-out system designed to stretch the floor, a departure from their previous reliance on low-post play. This new approach, however, presented challenges in their preseason debut against the Clippers, resulting in a 103-101 loss. The Warriors struggled, converting only six of 33 three-point attempts and committing 16 turnovers.
Guard De’Anthony Melton described the offensive showing as "pretty nasty," while point guard Brandon Williams called it "a little funky." Coach Kerr acknowledged the need for improvement in "spacing, flow," and overall execution. Star player Stephen Curry, who played 12 minutes and scored 10 points in the loss, noted the importance of consistent practice and film study for the team to adapt to the new system.
"It is hard to assess when you’re playing six-minute stretches. This is about reps, film, getting in shape and increasing the expectation of execution every preseason game we have," Curry said.
Draymond Green, a veteran of the Warriors' championship era, noted the significant adjustment required by the new offensive scheme. "I definitely feel it," Green said. "Whether I like it or not, it’s gonna happen."
Introducing Yaxel Lendeborg
Alongside the offensive overhaul, the Warriors are also integrating rookie Yaxel Lendeborg, the 11th overall pick in the recent draft. Lendeborg, who was named Summer League MVP, has garnered praise from his teammates, including Green. However, his preseason debut saw him score four points on 1-of-6 shooting in 19 minutes.
Kerr highlighted an instance where Lendeborg passed up a layup to attempt an extra pass, which resulted in a turnover. "We need Yaxel to have an aggressive scoring mentality," Kerr stated. "That’s something that we’re going to work with him on. Because he can make plays and he can score."
Curry believes Lendeborg has the potential to be "our lead offensive threat" when Curry is off the court, emphasizing the need for him to play with an aggressive scoring mindset and apply pressure on both ends of the floor.
Podziemski's Progress
Another player showing improvement is fourth-year guard Brandin Podziemski. Curry noted that Podziemski appears to be in better shape, looking "a little stronger, little quicker." Despite this perceived improvement, Podziemski struggled in the preseason opener, making only 2-of-10 field goal attempts. The team expects both Lendeborg and Podziemski to step up their performance as the season progresses.
