The Golden State Warriors declined an opportunity to trade for Jaylen Brown before the NBA trade deadline in February, reportedly due to a lack of organizational agreement on whether he could be the player to carry the franchise forward after the Steph Curry era.
According to Logan Murdock of The Ringer, the team's leadership was unable to reach a consensus on Brown's fit for the Warriors' long-term plans. This decision comes amidst growing speculation about potential rifts between Curry and the franchise.
Last season, Brown served as the primary option for the Boston Celtics due to Jayson Tatum's absence from an Achilles injury. He averaged 28.7 points per game, ranking him in the top five in the NBA, and was instrumental in the Celtics securing the second seed in the Eastern Conference with a 56-26 record.
Despite his strong individual performance, Brown was later traded by the Celtics to the Philadelphia 76ers this past summer. The 76ers have since continued to bolster their roster, notably signing LeBron James to a two-year deal.
The Warriors have been actively pursuing star players to complement Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler since the offseason began. However, they have missed out on several key targets, including James, Anthony Davis, and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic suggested that Curry may be growing weary of the team's pursuit of star players, potentially creating a strain in his relationship with the Warriors. While Curry has not publicly requested a trade, Thompson believes the repeated cycle of anticipation and disappointment could be impacting the 38-year-old star, who has a limited championship window remaining.
Curry is set to lead an aging Warriors team that has been hampered by injuries. Butler is recovering from a torn ACL, and Kristaps Porzingis played in only 32 games last season due to illness. Curry himself dealt with a knee injury that caused him to miss 39 games last year.
Despite these potential challenges and uncertainties, Murdock also reported that Curry remains committed to retiring as a member of the Golden State Warriors.
