Warren Buffett Steps Down as Berkshire Hathaway Chairman

Warren Buffett has stepped down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, concluding a six-decade leadership of the US business giant. The 96-year-old investor will transition to an advisory role as chairman emeritus, remaining on the company board to provide his judgment and perspective. His son, Howard Buffett, has taken over non-executive board duties.

The transition follows a planned succession, with Greg Abel already having assumed the chief executive role nine months prior. Known as the "Oracle of Omaha," Buffett is credited with one of the most successful investment track records in modern history. He took control of Berkshire Hathaway in 1965 when it was a struggling textile mill and transformed it into a global conglomerate valued at approximately $1.1 trillion.

Under Buffett's leadership, Berkshire Hathaway grew to own a diverse portfolio of companies, including GEICO and Dairy Queen, and substantial stakes in major corporations like Apple and Coca-Cola. His investment philosophy, centered on "value investing"—acquiring companies with strong fundamentals at fair prices and holding them long-term—became widely influential. His annual shareholder letters and meetings established him as a significant mentor in the financial world.

Buffett described the change as an orderly passing of the baton. In a letter to shareholders, he noted that the timing was right, coinciding with his 96th birthday and the birth of a great-grandchild. He acknowledged that "Father Time always wins" in the end, concluding his tenure with a reflection on his privilege in serving as chairman.

Berkshire Hathaway has assured investors that day-to-day operations will remain unaffected. Greg Abel will continue to manage corporate strategy and capital decisions, while Howard Buffett's role as chairman will focus on safeguarding the firm's culture and values. Howard Buffett, with experience as a farmer, philanthropist, and sheriff, brings over three decades of board experience to his new position.
