Warren Buffett, 96, has stepped down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, concluding a tenure of over six decades leading the investment firm. His son, Howard Buffett, 71, has been named his successor as chairman of the approximately $1.03 trillion conglomerate.

Howard Buffett has served as a director for Berkshire Hathaway since 1993. The elder Buffett will assume the title of chairman emeritus, an honorary role that allows him to retain an advisory capacity within the organization. He will also remain on the Board of Directors.

In a letter to shareholders, Buffett reflected on his time with Berkshire, stating, "Father Time always wins. He has, however, been generous with me." He expressed confidence in the company's future, adding, "He has given me the opportunity to see Berkshire reach a point where I am more confident than ever about what lies ahead."

Buffett relinquished the CEO position eight months prior, with Greg Abel taking over that role. "My expectations for him were sky high from the start, and he has exceeded them," Buffett wrote of Abel. "He has taken hold of the Chief Executive Officer job in every respect. He has been making the decisions that matter for some time now, and I have not had to think twice about any of them."

Buffett described his time as chairman as "privilege of a lifetime" and stated he looks forward to remaining a shareholder. He noted his recent 96th birthday celebration with family, including a great-grandchild who had just turned one, humorously observing that the toddler "is moving a bit faster than I am these days."

Under Buffett's leadership, Berkshire Hathaway grew to own numerous companies, including Geico, Duracell, and Dairy Queen. Abel, in a statement, affirmed that "The culture Warren built and the values he championed will remain at the heart of Berkshire, and Howard will be their guardian."

Buffett's investment strategies and business acumen have significantly influenced generations of corporate leaders and investors. His trades have often prompted substantial market movements, whether increasing stakes in companies like Japanese trading houses or Occidental Petroleum, or divesting from others such as DaVita.
