Warburtons Bread Lorry Overturns on A1, Causing Widespread Disruption
Loaves spill across both carriageways, leading to road closures and traffic delays.
A Warburtons bread lorry overturned on the A1 near Bowburn, south of Durham, early Wednesday morning, causing significant traffic disruption. The incident occurred shortly after 5 a.m. between junctions 60 and 61, when the vehicle flipped and its load of bread was scattered across both directions of the major roadway.
Durham Police reported that the lorry shed its load across both carriageways, necessitating the closure of the road. Images from the scene showed the lorry on its side and bread loaves spread across the tarmac. The closure led to gridlocked traffic, and motorists were advised to seek alternative routes.
The driver of the lorry was transported to a local hospital for treatment, though their condition was not immediately known. National Highways North East teams were dispatched to clear what they described as a "large debris field" composed primarily of baked goods.
By Wednesday afternoon, a section of the A1 remained closed as recovery operations continued and teams worked to repair damage to the central reservation barrier. The HGV was eventually righted and removed from the road by a crane.
This incident occurred just hours before another lorry, reportedly also carrying baked goods, was involved in a similar crash on the A66 eastbound near Bowes.
