Walter Koenig, the actor best known for his role as Ensign Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek television series, has died at the age of 90. His agent confirmed his death on Sunday in Los Angeles.

Koenig joined the Star Trek cast in its second season in 1967, portraying the youthful, often eager Russian navigator of the Starship Enterprise. He reprised the role in six of the original cast's feature films, from "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" in 1979 to "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" in 1991. He also voiced President Anton Chekov in the 2023 series "Star Trek: Picard."

Born in Chicago and raised in Manhattan, Koenig was the son of Lithuanian immigrants. He studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York. His character, Chekov, was introduced with a distinctive mop-top haircut and often made jokes about Russian inventions. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry's studio reportedly introduced the character partly in response to criticism from the Soviet Communist Party's newspaper, Pravda, about the lack of a Russian character on the show, aligning with an optimistic vision of US-Soviet cooperation during the Cold War space race. Koenig, however, later denied this claim.

Koenig also wrote an episode for the show's animated spin-off. In the mid-to-late 1990s, he played a starkly different character, the ruthless Psi Corps telepath Alfred Bester, in the science fiction series "Babylon 5."

His work on "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" (1982) and "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" (1986) earned him nominations from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films. His final film appearance in the franchise was in "Star Trek Generations" (1994).

Koenig was also a published author. His other television credits included appearances on "Columbo" and "Futurama."

Earlier in 2024, Koenig received the Platinum Award for best actor at the Independent Shorts Awards for his performance in the short film "Mr Fleischmann."

He married Judy Levitt, who appeared with him in "Star Trek" films and "Babylon 5," in 1965. She died in 2022. Their son, Andrew Koenig, an actor known for his role on "Growing Pains," died by suicide in 2010 at age 41. Koenig is survived by his daughter, Danielle Koenig, an actress and screenwriter.
