Walmart Pasta Recall Escalated to Highest FDA Risk Level
Frozen Alfredo Fettuccine sold nationwide flagged for potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination, carrying a risk of severe illness or death.
A nationwide recall of frozen pasta sold at Walmart has been elevated to Class I by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), signifying a high-risk situation due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This designation indicates a reasonable probability that exposure to the product could cause serious adverse health consequences or death.
The recall initially issued last month was updated last week and received its Class I status on Tuesday. The affected product is Gias Foods' bettergoods Authentic Italian Lemon Alfredo Fettuccine, sold in 22-ounce yellow plastic bags.
Two specific lots, L6079C and L6080C, with expiration dates of September 19 and September 20, 2027, are included in the recall. The UPC number for the product is 194346442706. The pasta was distributed to Walmart stores across the country.
The recall stems from findings during a routine sampling program conducted by the Washington State Department of Agriculture and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which revealed the presence of the bacteria in the finished products.
Gias Foods has halted distribution of the pasta as the company and the FDA investigate the source of the potential contamination. Consumers are advised not to consume the product and to either discard it or return it to the place of purchase.
As of October 1, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall.
Listeria monocytogenes causes listeriosis, an infection that can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. While many infected individuals recover without specific treatment, severe cases can lead to complications such as fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. The infection can spread from the gut to the central nervous system, resulting in severe illness and potentially death. Approximately 250 Americans die from listeria infections annually.
