Walmart Opens New High-Tech Fulfillment Center in Stockton, California
The 900,000-square-foot facility aims to speed up online order fulfillment and package delivery across the West Coast, creating over 1,000 jobs.
Walmart has opened a new high-tech fulfillment center in Stockton, California, a move designed to enhance its e-commerce operations and job creation on the West Coast.
The 900,000-square-foot facility will enable Walmart to process online orders and distribute packages more rapidly throughout the region. The company anticipates the center will generate more than 1,000 new jobs, including roles in technology.
Barat Smith, vice president of operations for Walmart’s next-generation fulfillment network, emphasized the company's commitment to community integration. "We want to be part of the community, not just an employer in the community," Smith told KCRA. "They live here. They work here. Their kids go to school here. So it’s not just about being an employer. We want to be deeply ingrained in the community and the grants that we give. That’s just a part of what we do. A big part of what we do is volunteer, right? So we volunteer in these places. We give back to our community in more ways than just monetary."
This Stockton facility represents the latest addition to Walmart's "next generation" of fulfillment centers. These centers incorporate an automated, high-density storage and retrieval system, streamlining a previously 12-step manual process down to five steps.
According to Walmart, the technology employed at the center will double storage capacity and the daily number of customer orders that can be fulfilled. This is expected to expand the reach of its next-day and two-day shipping services. Fulfillment centers of this nature allow Walmart to offer next-day and two-day shipping to 95% of the country.
"The new Stockton facility is another great example of how Walmart is people-led and tech-powered," said Maren Waggoner, senior vice president, End-to-End People Operations at Walmart U.S. "It’s an investment in technology that will pave the way for good jobs and great careers for our associates. I look forward to seeing the positive impact this facility will have on the Central Valley community, creating new opportunities to work with cutting edge technology and lasting career growth with Walmart."
In addition to job creation and operational enhancements, Walmart provided $10,000 in grants to local organizations, including the Emergency Food Bank of Stockton and Unbound Stockton Community School.
