Walmart Combines Memberships for Annual Savings
The retail giant's new bundled subscription offers nearly $100 in potential savings ahead of the holiday season.
Walmart has introduced a new membership offering that combines its Walmart+ and Sam's Club Plus programs for $120 annually, a move designed to provide shoppers with significant savings as household budgets face continued pressure from rising prices.
The bundled subscription, launched Tuesday, effectively costs $10 per month but requires an upfront annual payment, with no monthly option or free trial available. Walmart CEO John Furner stated that the company aimed to roll out the offer before the busy holiday shopping period, recognizing that many families are seeking ways to manage their expenses more effectively.
"It does help at a time when we do see some customers showing some signs of pressure," Furner told Fox News, referencing increased energy costs as a contributing factor to consumer strain.
Inflation stood at 3.7 percent in September compared to the previous year, according to government data, while gasoline prices saw a 34.2 percent surge over the same period, adding to financial pressures for consumers.
The new package merges two memberships that would typically cost $218 annually if purchased separately, presenting a potential saving of $98 for individuals who utilize both services. Walmart+ is priced at $98 per year, and Sam's Club Plus costs $120 annually. In comparison, Amazon Prime's annual fee is $139.
Members of the combined offering will gain benefits from both programs, including free delivery on eligible items from both Walmart and Sam's Club, access to member-exclusive pricing, and entry to Sam's Club warehouse locations. The package also includes a choice between Peacock and Paramount+ streaming services, fuel discounts at more than 17,000 participating gas stations, and 2% in Sam's Cash on eligible purchases.
Furner noted that the company has expanded its price rollbacks from approximately 7,000 items at the end of its first fiscal quarter to around 11,000 by the end of the second quarter. Despite a generally resilient consumer environment in recent quarters, he acknowledged that some customers are beginning to exhibit signs of financial strain.
The combined membership could also serve to encourage shoppers to allocate more of their grocery and household spending to Sam's Club, which competes with rivals such as Costco. Walmart reported a 17% increase in membership fee revenue in its latest quarterly results, with Walmart+ membership experiencing double-digit growth.
The new deal has also sparked discussion among consumers online. On Reddit, some users have speculated whether the launch indicates increased financial pressure on consumers, while others suggested it is an attempt by Walmart to attract customers away from Costco. Some commenters viewed the move as a potential indicator of a recession, while others saw it as a strategic effort to gain market share.
Existing Walmart+ annual members can add Sam's Club Plus for an additional $22 per year. Current Sam's Club Plus members can activate Walmart+ at no extra charge. Walmart has also confirmed that its U.S. store and Sam's Club employees will receive both memberships as part of their employee benefits.
