WalletHub has released its latest ranking of the best small cities in the United States, evaluating over 1,300 municipalities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000. The study utilized 45 distinct measures, focusing on factors such as education and health, to identify communities offering a high quality of life and affordability.
This analysis positions smaller cities as attractive alternatives to major metropolises like New York and Miami, emphasizing their ability to provide a robust living experience without the associated costs and potential drawbacks of larger urban centers.
Among the top-ranking cities, Lexington, located just outside Boston, was highlighted for its blend of historic New England charm with strong educational systems and amenities appealing to families.
Apex, North Carolina, emerged as a fast-growing Southern city on the list. Situated near Raleigh, Apex has seen significant population growth, reaching an estimated over 86,000 residents as of August 2026.
Saratoga Springs, New York, climbed to fifth place in the 2026 rankings, up from eighth place the previous year. The city is known for its mineral springs, which have historically made it a popular resort destination.
Carmel, Indiana, also featured on the list. Located north of Indianapolis, Carmel boasts meticulously planned streets, well-maintained public spaces, and a vibrant arts scene, contributing to its standing.
Brookfield was noted for its appeal to those seeking a quieter home base without complete isolation from urban amenities, highlighting its strategic location as a key advantage.
