Wall Street Execs Predict OpenAI IPO in Early 2027 Amidst AI Market Frenzy
Despite OpenAI's statements denying immediate public offering plans, industry insiders anticipate a Q1 2027 IPO, fueled by competitive pressures and a rapidly evolving AI landscape.
OpenAI has publicly stated it has no plans for an initial public offering (IPO) this year, but senior Wall Street executives anticipate the artificial intelligence giant could go public in the first quarter of 2027, according to sources familiar with the matter.
This timeline comes as OpenAI's chief rival, Anthropic, is reportedly preparing its own IPO, having filed its S-1 paperwork. This move by Anthropic is seen by some as a catalyst, potentially driving OpenAI to also consider a public offering sooner rather than later. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously expressed concerns about the potential dangers of advanced AI, aligning with similar sentiments from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. However, these cautionary statements have not deterred competitive moves within the AI sector.
Anthropic's potential IPO could value the company as high as $2 trillion, a figure that would rival or even surpass the record-breaking IPO of SpaceX. Meanwhile, OpenAI has reportedly been engaged in private fundraising, securing around $300 billion in a round that values the company at $1 trillion. Sources indicate that Wall Street figures are urging top AI companies to capitalize on the current market conditions before potential concerns about an AI bubble or increased competition for investor capital intensify.
Meta is also reportedly planning a significant secondary stock sale, further contributing to the competitive landscape for investment. One Wall Street CEO directly stated that an OpenAI IPO is likely to occur in the "first quarter" of 2027.
An OpenAI spokesperson reiterated the company's consistent stance: "We have been consistent in saying that we have not set a timetable for an IPO. Last month our CEO made clear that the priority is safety and that we will not (be) going public this year."
The rapid advancements in AI are recognized for their transformative potential across various sectors, including business, healthcare, and defense. However, there are growing concerns about the increasing investment and borrowing within the industry potentially outpacing sustainable returns.
While Anthropic is positioning itself with a $2 trillion valuation and OpenAI has achieved a $1 trillion valuation through private funding, the success of Anthropic's IPO could potentially boost OpenAI's market value further. It is suggested that Anthropic's recent hesitance regarding its IPO timeline may be linked to supply chain issues and a dispute with the Defense Department over the use of its AI systems for military applications. This issue contrasts with OpenAI, which reportedly has no similar restrictions with the Pentagon, potentially simplifying its path to a public offering.
