Walker Kessler's Immediate Impact Bolsters Lakers' Championship Aspirations

Walker Kessler, the 7-foot-1 center acquired by the Los Angeles Lakers in a summer sign-and-trade deal, is rapidly proving to be the franchise anchor they desperately needed. In his initial two appearances, Kessler has showcased a blend of offensive efficiency and defensive prowess that has significantly bolstered the team's performance and addressed their struggles from the previous season.

In the Lakers' 125-117 victory over the Clippers on Friday, Kessler recorded 22 points on an efficient 10-of-14 shooting, complemented by eight rebounds, three assists, six blocked shots, and three steals. He registered the highest plus-minus rating on the court at +18, highlighting his substantial impact on both ends of the game. This performance followed an exceptional debut against the Warriors on Wednesday, where he scored 26 points on perfect 12-of-12 shooting, adding nine rebounds, one assist, and two blocks.

The Lakers pursued Kessler, 25, to address their 20th-ranked defensive efficiency from the previous season. The team committed a significant package of two future first-round picks and two first-round pick swaps to the Utah Jazz to acquire him, subsequently signing him to a four-year, $130 million contract. This substantial investment meant the Lakers would forgo tradable first-round draft picks for the next seven years, placing immense pressure on Kessler to deliver.

Kessler's early performances have paid dividends, with his debut against the Warriors marking a historical achievement as the first Laker since Wilt Chamberlain to shoot 12-for-12 in a game. His outing against the Clippers also placed him among elite company, as the eighth Laker to record at least six blocks and three steals in a single game.

Lakers coach JJ Redick expressed confidence in Kessler's potential, stating, "He’s a fantastic basketball player and I think he’ll continue to get better. I mean, that was one of the reasons that we wanted him and he was so appealing to us was because of his age and feeling like the fit with our two stars was really good. And [he’s] someone that can continue to grow and become just a fantastic player in the NBA."

Last season, Kessler's development was hampered by a torn left labrum, requiring surgery and limiting him to just five games. This injury raised questions about his ceiling and ability to justify the considerable assets the Lakers traded for him. However, his current performances are silencing those doubts.

"Oh, it’s so much fun. It was definitely a tougher year for me. But God is faithful. And just to be here now, I’m just so thankful. So thankful for this opportunity. So thankful to be healthy. Just very, very thankful," Kessler said about his return to the court.

The Lakers expect Kessler to develop into an All-Defensive caliber player, forming a potent 'Big 3' alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. His impact was particularly evident in the third quarter against the Clippers, where his defensive presence helped the Lakers extend a 14-point lead.

"It just felt like Walker was everywhere in that third," Redick observed. "…There were multiple times [in the game] where it felt like they had a layup and he either came over and blocked the shot or created an altered shot."

Kessler is set to face his former team, the Utah Jazz, in his next game. This return to Utah will be a significant moment, as he looks to continue proving his worth to the Lakers organization that invested heavily in his potential. The team's aggressive acquisition of Kessler underscores their commitment to contending for a championship, with early returns suggesting the gamble may well pay off.
