Walker Kessler Embraces "Joy" Ahead of Lakers Debut After Season Lost to Injury

Walker Kessler is ready to approach his first season with the Los Angeles Lakers with a renewed sense of enthusiasm, embracing the opportunity to play after a year-long absence due to a season-ending left shoulder injury.

Kessler, acquired by the Lakers in a July sign-and-trade deal from the Utah Jazz, spoke about his perspective on the setback. "It was tough, but I think it’s always important to remember things happen for a reason," Kessler said. "And I think that with the absence of basketball, my longing to play basketball grew even more to where I’m gonna be playing with so much joy that I’ve played with in a long time because I’ve never sat out for a whole season."

The Lakers invested heavily in Kessler, signing him to a four-year, $130 million contract and trading away significant future draft capital. This move signals a strong belief in his potential to be a cornerstone player for a franchise with championship aspirations. Lakers coach JJ Redick expressed his long-standing admiration for Kessler, stating he had identified him as a player he wanted on the team since Kessler's rookie year.

Kessler is eager to establish himself as a defensive anchor alongside Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves, forming part of what is being called the Lakers' "Big 3." However, his preseason debut has been delayed due to a jammed finger sustained during training camp. He is currently listed as questionable for the Lakers' upcoming exhibition game against the Golden State Warriors.

Despite the continued caution from the team's staff, Kessler participated in live drills during a recent practice. He expressed his understanding and trust in the team's medical and coaching staff, acknowledging that patience is key. "I think it would be a little different if I played last season, but because I didn’t play last season, I’m like, ‘Ah, I want to play really bad,'" Kessler said. "I’m ready to play, but I trust the staff and I trust the trainers, the coaches, and front office, you know? So yeah, just listening to them right now."

Kessler, recognized as an elite rebounder and rim protector, averaged 11.1 points, 12.2 rebounds, and 2.4 blocked shots per game during the 2024-2025 season. His ability to contest shots at the rim was also notable, tying him for fifth-most in the league. The Lakers anticipate he will bring significant defensive impact and offensive efficiency, particularly in pick-and-roll situations with Dončić.

Looking back at his injury and lengthy recovery, Kessler maintains a positive outlook. "It depends on how you look at it," Kessler said. "you can always look at a positive outcome for some situations. So, that’s what I’m choosing to do."
