Walker Kessler Eager for Lakers Debut, Status Uncertain

Walker Kessler, the Lakers' significant free-agent acquisition, has progressed to full participation in team practices following a left pinky finger injury, but his debut in the Lakers' preseason schedule is still uncertain. Kessler jammed his finger on a backboard during training camp and missed the team's first three preseason games.

Kessler, who signed a four-year, $130 million contract as part of a July sign-and-trade with the Jazz, was seen with his finger wrapped on Sunday. He stated the injury was minor and that he felt "great" during Sunday's practice.

Despite his eagerness to play, both Kessler and coach JJ Redick declined to commit to his availability for Tuesday's game against the Warriors. Redick indicated that the team would monitor Kessler's condition and "be smart with it," leaving open the possibility of him playing later in the week. The Lakers' final preseason game is scheduled for Friday against the Nuggets.

Kessler expressed a strong desire to play, especially after missing most of the 2025-26 season due to shoulder surgery. "I want to play really bad," he said. "I’m ready to play, but I trust the staff and I trust the trainers, the coaches, and front office."
