Waitrose Recalls Oat Drink Due to Potential Bacterial Contamination

Waitrose has initiated a recall of its Essential Unsweetened Oat Drink due to concerns over potential contamination with harmful bacteria. The supermarket stated that a breakdown in temperature control during the product's handling may have rendered it unsafe for consumption.

Consuming food that has been stored at incorrect temperatures can lead to the multiplication of potentially harmful bacteria, increasing the risk of infections. Common symptoms associated with food poisoning include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fever, often appearing within hours or days of consuming spoiled food. These illnesses are frequently caused by bacteria such as campylobacter, salmonella, or E. coli, which can thrive in conditions of improper temperature control.

Food safety authorities are advising customers who purchased the affected oat drink not to consume it. Instead, they should return the product to the Waitrose & Partners branch where it was bought to receive a full refund. The recall specifically impacts 1-liter cartons of Waitrose Essential Unsweetened Oat Drink with use-by dates ranging from August 14 to October 29, 2026. These products were purchased between September 2 and September 21, 2026.

Waitrose has issued a notice through the Food Standards Agency (FSA), warning consumers about the potential microbiological contamination. Point-of-sale notices are being displayed in stores to inform customers of the recall.
