Vrabel Snaps at Reporter Over Maye's Struggles After Patriots' First Win

New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel bristled at a reporter's question regarding quarterback Drake Maye's early-season struggles immediately after the team secured its first win of the season on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Patriots defeated the Steelers 20-3, but the victory was tempered by continued concerns over Maye's performance.

Following the game, Boston Globe reporter Ben Volin pressed Vrabel about his level of concern for Maye's play through the first two weeks. Vrabel responded, "You're not going to ruin my Sunday." Another reporter, Greg Bedard, also inquired about Maye, prompting Vrabel to reiterate his disinclination to focus on negatives after a win.

Maye's performance in Week 2 did little to alleviate concerns. He completed 14 of 22 passes for 208 yards, with no touchdowns and one interception. Although he connected with receiver Romeo Doubs for a 63-yard gain, the Patriots' offense struggled to maintain consistent drives, scoring only 13 points. The defense was instrumental in the win, holding the Steelers to just three points and 235 total yards. Defensive plays, including a strip-sack returned for a touchdown, were key to the victory.

This performance followed a difficult season opener against the Seattle Seahawks, where New England lost 13-10. In that game, Maye threw three interceptions in the fourth quarter, including one in the end zone with under 30 seconds remaining that ended a potential game-tying drive. He finished that game with 178 passing yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. Maye himself acknowledged after the Seattle game that he had lost patience and made costly decisions.

Through two games, Maye has thrown four interceptions and only one touchdown pass. This starkly contrasts with his 2025 season, when he passed for 4,394 yards and 31 touchdowns, finishing as the runner-up for NFL MVP.

While Vrabel is entitled to celebrate the win, the persistent questions about his franchise quarterback's form suggest that the concerns about Maye's performance are likely to continue, regardless of the team's outcome on any given Sunday.
