Vrabel Rejects Rumors of Rift with Maye, States QB Was Reason for Taking Patriots Job

New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel has publicly addressed and dismissed rumors suggesting a strained relationship with quarterback Drake Maye. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Vrabel stated unequivocally that Maye's presence was the deciding factor in his decision to take the coaching job.

"Let me just tell you why I'm here. I'm here because Drake was the quarterback," Vrabel declared. "Believe it or not, I had choices to where I wanted to coach. I wanted to coach here because Drake was the quarterback. I don't have really much other to add to that about a comment from an unnamed source. But I'll just tell you what I've told numerous people if they want to ask me why I'm here."

The comments came after speculation surfaced on WEEI's "The Greg Hill Show," where an anonymous insider reportedly claimed there were issues between Vrabel and Maye. This speculation coincided with Maye's early-season struggles.

The Patriots currently hold a 1-2 record after a significant loss to the Jaguars. The team's offense has struggled, scoring just 36 points through the first three games, a mark tied for the fewest in the league. Maye has been at the center of these offensive difficulties, completing 63.8 percent of his passes for one touchdown and six interceptions. He has also fumbled twice.

Maye was added to the injury report with a right shoulder issue but participated fully in practice. His availability for the upcoming game against the Bills remains unspecified. Vrabel had previously expressed public criticism of Maye's performance, particularly an interception in the end zone against Jacksonville, which he called "a terrible decision."

Despite the early season challenges and critical remarks, Vrabel reiterated his commitment to Maye as the team's starting quarterback, stating, "Drake's our quarterback."
