New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel provided a candid explanation for the team's decision to trade wide receiver Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans, emphasizing that the move was a practical one given the team's depth at the position. Vrabel indicated that without unforeseen injuries, Boutte would have likely found himself inactive on game days.

"That was one place where we do have some depth, and I think for all parties involved, that was probably the best thing," Vrabel told reporters following the Patriots' preseason finale loss to the Cleveland Browns. "Without injuries, Kayshon probably would have been inactive. Unfortunately, it just, it’s kind of the way it was. It’s just with him not playing special teams."

The Patriots recently strengthened their wide receiver corps by acquiring A.J. Brown in a trade and signing Romeo Doubs in free agency. This influx of talent, coupled with existing players like Mack Hollins, DeMario Douglas, and rookie Kyle Williams, pushed Boutte further down the depth chart.

VP of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf corroborated Vrabel's assessment, calling Boutte "the odd man out." He also noted that the trade, which brought back safety Jaylen Reed and a seventh-round draft pick from Houston, was an opportunity the team decided to pursue.

"Again, the opportunity to acquire Jaylen Reed for a player that Houston wanted is something that we decided to pull the trigger on. We feel really good about our receiver group. We have guys that can play in multiple positions. They all really complement each other well," Wolf stated.

Boutte, a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, had a notable performance in the Patriots' playoff run last season, contributing 168 yards and a touchdown across four games. He also recorded 33 catches for 551 yards and six touchdowns during the regular season.

Vrabel also acknowledged Boutte's personal journey, including his public struggles with gambling addiction dating back to his time at LSU. "I tried to thank Kayshon as many times as I could. I texted him again today," Vrabel said. "It’s just his maturity, his growth, his ability to put into words last year and share his own personal struggle, but also the growth that he made from that. That’s positively going to affect a lot of people."

In Houston, Boutte is expected to move up the depth chart and compete for targets, particularly following an season-ending injury to Jayden Higgins, behind established receiver Nico Collins.
