Volunteer Bakers Face Rising Costs to Provide Birthday Cakes for Children

Volunteer bakers are increasingly covering the costs of ingredients out of their own pockets to ensure children in need do not miss out on birthday cakes. The Free Cakes for Kids Fareham and Gosport group, part of a national network, has reported a rise in demand and is actively seeking more volunteers.

Natalie Parker, who now runs the Fareham and Gosport branch, joined the organization while on maternity leave. She stated that the thought of a child not having a birthday cake is "heart-breaking." Referrals for cakes come through partner organizations such as food banks, churches, and schools, as the group does not directly interact with families. Requests are then posted in a private Facebook group where volunteers can accept them.

Volunteers are responsible for purchasing ingredients, baking, and delivering the cakes. The group can only provide toppers, boards, and boxes when it has successfully raised funds. Parker noted the financial strain, especially with rising food costs. "It's not cheap, especially with food costs going up," she said. "But it's a small price, for me and I know for our volunteers, to pay for that child getting a birthday cake that they otherwise wouldn't be able to have."

The group has over 30 bakers, with experience levels varying from home bakers who contribute a few cakes annually to professional bakers with their own businesses. Parker emphasized that extensive baking experience is not a requirement to join. Volunteers often customize cakes to reflect a child's favorite characters or interests.
