Chloe Malle, who is slated to become Vogue's head of editorial content in September 2025, recently shared her perspective on fashion and her personal style in an interview with Emily Sundberg for the Feed Me Substack. Malle, daughter of Candice Bergen and the late director Louis Malle, described her own style as "dowdy" and suggested that fashion is best when "not taken too seriously."

Malle admitted that if she could dress without judgment, she would opt for comfort: "I think I'd wear what I'm most comfortable in, and what I feel most like myself in," she stated. "This would likely be a striped sweater, High Sport pants, and Belgian loafers – I guess we do all morph into our mothers…"

Addressing the future of Vogue, Malle emphasized the importance of a "wry sense of humor about what we do." She believes that while Vogue is the "fashion authority," fashion itself is improved when not excessively serious. "We are the fashion authority, but fashion is better – I believe – when not taken too seriously," she remarked.

Malle's appointment to succeed Anna Wintour, who remains Vogue's Global Chief Content Officer and Global Editorial Director, comes as the publication navigates a changing media landscape. Wintour, who led Vogue for 37 years, has been known for her distinctive demeanor.

Earlier this year, a moment between Malle and Wintour during an interview with The New York Times reporter Jessica Testa drew attention. When asked about utilizing a larger budget, similar to Vogue's in the 1990s, Malle outlined plans for investments in podcast studios, increased salaries, social media teams, and app staffing. Wintour's reaction, perceived by some as a "withering look," prompted her to interject, stating that Vogue maintains a "very healthy budget" and that resource allocation is dynamic.

Since joining Vogue in 2011, Malle has contributed to the magazine's podcast, expanded its newsletters and wedding coverage, and launched initiatives such as "Dogue," a publication for dogs. She is set to assume her new role in September 2025.
