Vitek Vanecek's Goalie Position Uncertain Amid Islanders' Health Concerns

Vitek Vanecek finds himself in a precarious situation, with his role on the New York Islanders largely dependent on external factors rather than his own performance. Signed to a one-year, $1 million contract this offseason, Vanecek's roster spot is contingent upon the team's assessment of Semyon Varlamov's health and the strategic decision to keep a third goaltender.
Coach Pete DeBoer acknowledged the complexity of the situation following a recent preseason game, stating that the possibility of carrying three netminders "does handcuff you." He indicated that the final decision would depend on Varlamov's condition and that while not the preferred scenario, it remains an option.
Varlamov has shown no signs of lingering issues during training camp, participating actively and appearing healthy. The organization is committed to giving him the opportunity to serve as Ilya Sorokin's backup, especially given his dedication to returning to play after undergoing two partial knee replacements. However, the long-term impact of an 84-game season, including travel and practice demands, on Varlamov's surgically repaired knees remains an unknown.
This situation is compounded by the Islanders' recent history of overworking Sorokin due to a lack of a reliable backup when Varlamov was sidelined. This contributed to the team missing the playoffs in consecutive seasons.
Last season, Vanecek posted an .883 save percentage in 22 games. While this performance may not inspire overwhelming confidence, he brings over 200 games of NHL experience, making him a known quantity for the team. The organization also has emerging prospects like Joshua Kotai in the AHL, who has had a solid camp.
"I’m not thinking about it too much," Vanecek commented on his uncertain future. "Just doing my best, and then we go see what’s gonna happen."
The simplest resolution would be for Vanecek to clear waivers unclaimed, but given the league's general need for goaltending, this is not guaranteed. The Islanders are wary of losing Vanecek on waivers only to have Varlamov sustain an injury later.
The team's roster decisions are further complicated by a competitive forward group and promising young players.
