Vita Vea's agent, Collin Roberts, stated that negotiations for a new contract have stalled, making a trade from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers increasingly likely. "I just don't see it ending in anything but a trade at this point," Roberts told the Tampa Bay Times. Vea has been absent from practice as he seeks an extension beyond the final season of his four-year, $71 million deal signed in 2022.
Football analyst Ted Nguyen reported that Vea has expressed a preference for a California-based team or the Las Vegas Raiders. This reported preference positions the San Francisco 49ers as a prime target for acquiring the two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle.
For the Bay Area native, San Francisco offers a potential homecoming and the long-term contract commitment Vea desires. The 49ers also have a significant need on their interior defensive line, an area where Vea's impact could be substantial. In the 2025 season, San Francisco's interior defensive linemen combined for 45 pressures, while Vea individually recorded 44 pressures, including 4.5 sacks, 13 quarterback hits, and 31 hurries. His ability to collapse the pocket could complement edge pressure generated by players like Nick Bosa.
The addition of Vea could also provide stability to the 49ers' defensive line, which has faced injuries. Mykel Williams is recovering from a torn ACL, Alfred Collins is dealing with a shoulder injury, and Nick Bosa is returning from a season-ending knee injury. Vea, conversely, has missed only three games over the past three seasons.
At 6-foot-4 and 347 pounds, Vea has the ability to occupy multiple blockers and could allow younger defensive tackles to develop without immediate heavy reliance. San Francisco has approximately $71.5 million in cap space, which could accommodate Vea's salary and a potential contract extension.
Acquiring Vea would require draft capital and a significant financial commitment. However, the alternative for the 49ers is to rely on a group of developing and recovering defenders to contend for a Super Bowl. While Tampa Bay retains control of Vea's immediate future, his agent's assessment suggests a trade is probable, and the 49ers possess a combination of need, financial flexibility, and personal appeal that makes them a strong candidate to acquire him.
