Two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Vita Vea has requested a trade from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, reportedly with a preference for joining a team in California or the Las Vegas Raiders, according to football analyst Ted Nguyen.
The potential destinations include the Los Angeles Chargers, San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Rams, and the Raiders.
Chargers' Defensive Needs
The Chargers stand out as the team with the most significant need for Vea's interior pass-rush capabilities. In the previous season, the team ranked last in the NFL with only 41 pressures generated by its interior defensive linemen, and its 8.30% pressure rate placed 28th. This represented a considerable weakness despite the addition of Dalvin Tomlinson in the offseason.
Vea alone generated 44 pressures last season, exceeding the Chargers' entire interior defensive line group. He also recorded 4.5 sacks and 31 hurries, with a 9.19% pressure rate. His presence would offer a substantial upgrade, providing a dependable pocket-collapser capable of drawing double teams, thereby creating better opportunities for edge rushers and bolstering the run defense.
49ers' Financial and Geographic Appeal
The San Francisco 49ers are considered a close second among Vea's preferred destinations. The team's league-leading cap space could provide an advantage over the Chargers. San Francisco tied for 24th in interior pressures with 47 and ranked 29th in pressure rate at 8.10%.
Acquiring Vea would strengthen the defensive line alongside players like Osa Odighizuwa and a healthy Nick Bosa, making it more difficult for opponents to focus protection away from the edge. Vea's stability would also be valuable as players such as Alfred Collins, Mykel Williams, and Bosa recover from injuries. Additionally, San Francisco offers a homecoming for Vea, who attended Milpitas High School before being selected 12th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Raiders' Rebuilding Timeline
The Las Vegas Raiders present a less compelling option. While the team possesses sufficient draft capital to make a competitive offer to the Buccaneers, concerns remain regarding limited cap space and the team's rebuilding phase. Absorbing Vea's $17 million salary and potentially extending a contract for a 31-year-old defensive tackle may not align with the Raiders' new era focused on No. 1 pick Fernando Mendoza.
Vea may also be seeking a team that offers a clearer path toward a final Super Bowl appearance.
Rams' Limited Need
The Los Angeles Rams appear to need Vea the least, especially with the ongoing consideration of a potential reunion with Aaron Donald. The Rams already led the NFL in interior pressures with 94 and a 15.31% pressure rate. Following significant investments in players like Myles Garrett, Trent McDuffie, and Jaylen Watson, the Rams would likely have minimal incentive to outbid teams with more pressing interior defensive line needs.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will ultimately control the trade outcome, potentially prioritizing the highest offer over Vea's expressed preferences. However, the Chargers and 49ers emerge as the most viable options, with San Francisco offering financial flexibility and a championship-contending roster, while Los Angeles presents the most significant on-field need.
