Virginia Tech's Controversial Missed Field Goal Sparks Fan Outrage
A late field goal attempt in the Virginia Tech vs. Pittsburgh game has ignited debate among college football fans regarding its validity.
A highly contentious 36-yard field goal attempt by Virginia Tech kicker John Love has left college football fans debating the outcome of Friday night's game in Blacksburg, Virginia. The kick, which officials ruled did not cross the uprights, resulted in a 35-33 home loss for Virginia Tech and improved Pittsburgh's record to 5-0.
Fans seated behind the goalposts appeared to celebrate the kick, and Love, along with the holder, initially celebrated what they believed was a successful attempt. However, their celebrations turned to shock when referees signaled a miss. Pittsburgh players also celebrated the outcome.
Virginia Tech coach James Franklin admitted he could not definitively determine if the kick was good from his vantage point. "I think John Love is the best kicker in the country," Franklin stated. "I had so much confidence that that thing was going to go through. From my angle, I couldn't tell you one way or the other. ... At the end of the day, they said it didn't go through so everything else doesn't really matter a whole lot."
Under current NCAA rules, such plays are not subject to review. The controversial ending has led to widespread discussion on social media, with many users expressing skepticism about the officials' decision. Several posts on X (formerly Twitter) suggested that the kick appeared to be good based on fan reactions and available angles. One user wrote, "Having just re-watched the game-ending field goal attempt by Virginia Tech last night from two different angles, it sure looks like that kick was good, based on the reactions of the fans behind the goal posts and the players. Only the refs under the goal posts thought it was wide."
Another user opined, "I feel like he made this kick. And they're not showing us any good angles. Sucks for Virginia Tech." A third commented, "Ummmmm. I think Virginia Tech just got cheated…"
Some analyses shared online, including one from a college football podcast, presented different angles of the play, with one angle suggesting the ball may have missed the upright by a narrow margin. The podcast account noted, "We might have uncovered the one true angle that reveals Virginia Tech’s fate… no good??"
The game's outcome, particularly the final play, has raised questions about the technology and officiating in crucial moments of college football.
