Virginia Student Suffers Severe Brain Injuries in School Hallway Assault

A Meadowbrook High School student was critically injured after an alleged unprovoked assault in a school hallway, his family reported. Irvin E Rodriguez Gaitan, 18, was walking with his girlfriend on Monday when another student reportedly struck him, causing him to suffer severe brain damage.

He was admitted to the intensive care unit and remained unconscious for a day, according to a fundraising page set up by his brother, Kevin Rodriguez. The family announced that Irvin was taken home from the hospital on Tuesday after two days in ICU, though he faces a significant recovery ahead.

The Chesterfield Police Department has charged a 16-year-old suspect with aggravated malicious wounding. Police stated that no weapons were involved in the incident. The suspect, a minor, has not been identified and was taken to juvenile detention.

According to reports, the altercation began when Irvin accidentally bumped into the other student. The suspect has had previous encounters with the juvenile court system, having been arrested and charged for collateral damage related to a shooting at an apartment building several months prior. The judge dismissed that case without prejudice.

Meadowbrook High School Principal Craig Reed sent a message to students and parents acknowledging the incident, which he described as “upsetting and disruptive.” Police are reviewing surveillance footage to determine if any other individuals were involved and have increased their presence at the school throughout the week.

The family has raised over $48,000 through donations to support Irvin's medical treatment and recovery.
