Federal prosecutors have indicted Virginia Democratic state Sen. Louise Lucas, along with her two daughters and a nephew, on charges including marijuana dealing, money laundering, and bribery. Lucas, 82, surrendered to authorities on Thursday morning.

The indictment alleges that Lucas, a prominent figure in the Virginia state senate, "used her political position in the Virginia state senate to insulate the Lucas enterprise from criminal scrutiny, to further the goal of the wealth accumulation for the Lucas Enterprise and to seek legislation benefiting the Lucas Enterprise."

Seven individuals are charged in the case, which centers on co-ownership of a marijuana dispensary named The Cannabis Outlet in Portsmouth, Virginia. The indictment claims Lucas sought "generational wealth" and leveraged her political influence to shape state policy favorably for her business.

Marijuana remains illegal under federal law, though many states, including Virginia, have legalized it for recreational or medical use. The Justice Department typically tolerates state-legal marijuana businesses unless other alleged criminal activities are involved.

Virginia currently permits the dispensing of marijuana for medical purposes but does not allow recreational marijuana dispensaries. The FBI previously conducted a raid in May on a marijuana dispensary believed to be connected to Lucas.

Lucas gained national attention earlier this year for her efforts to push for a significant redrawing of Virginia's congressional districts to favor Democrats. However, the proposed redistricting plan was ultimately struck down by the Virginia Supreme Court in May.
