Polls have closed in Virginia for the state's primary elections for the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. The contests determine which candidates will advance to face incumbents and other contenders in the November general election.

Incumbent Democratic Sen. Mark Warner did not face a primary challenge. However, three Republicans vied for their party's nomination to challenge him in the general election: business leader Kim Farnington, retired Maj. Gen. Bert Mizusawa, and Lt. Col. David Williams of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves.

In the 7th Congressional District, a primary race unfolded for the Republican nomination. U.S. Army Lt. Col. Douglas Ollivant, businessman Philip Harding, and construction business owner Rick Smithers were on the ballot. The winner will face incumbent Democratic Rep. Eugene Vindman.

The 8th Congressional District also saw a Democratic primary, with multiple candidates seeking to unseat longtime Rep. Don Beyer.

Virginia's 2nd Congressional District, considered a competitive House race this cycle, did not hold a primary. The candidates for this seat are already set: incumbent GOP Rep. Jen Kiggans will face former Democratic Rep. Elaine Luria in a rematch. Luria previously held the seat from 2019 to 2023.

Virginia does not hold a primary election if only one candidate or no candidate qualifies for the ballot. Therefore, only three House districts had primaries on Tuesday. The election results will be available after polls close at 7 p.m. EST.
