A cat in Virginia has been reunited with its family after a harrowing ordeal that included being accidentally discarded with old couches, surviving a trip to the dump, and being rescued from a landfill pit. The six-year-old domestic shorthair named Mike went missing from his home on a Sunday, prompting a neighborhood search by his owners, Neal and his wife.
Their search took a grim turn when Neal Augenstein realized the cat might have been inside one of the three couches he had recently disposed of. He learned that the junk removal service had already transported the furniture to the local transfer station. This led Mike to the Fairfax County I-66 Transfer Station, where garbage is processed by heavy machinery.
During operations, a landfill worker, heavy equipment operator Mauricio Martinez, spotted Mike on a ledge approximately 15 feet above the ground within the trash pit. "He was scared and he was trapped," Martinez told reporters. Joshua Murphy, assistant superintendent at the landfill, confirmed the sighting and described how workers used a loader bucket to safely coax the cat into the equipment for rescue.
However, the ordeal was not over for Mike. He escaped his rescuers and disappeared into a storage area, leading to another search. Animal control officers eventually located the cat and took him to a nearby shelter. After further confusion regarding which shelter Mike was at, his family was able to bring him home. "It’s just a happy ending and I’m thankful to everyone who helped," said Augenstein. "There were so many times when things could have gone bad. We’re glad to have him home."
