A 4-year-old boy was fatally attacked by an American bully dog in Louisa County, Virginia, on Sunday, according to police and the child's family. The incident concluded with law enforcement fatally shooting the canine.
Responders arrived at the scene and found the child, identified as Garcia Welch, engaged with the dog. Police reported that officers had to dispatch the animal while it was still actively biting the boy.
Emergency services attempted to airlift Welch to a hospital, but he was pronounced dead at the scene before he could be loaded onto the helicopter. The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office has stated that the dog attack is under investigation.
Garcia’s aunt, Cynthia Russ, described the child as "a beautiful kid" who was "fun and sweet and kind." She added, "He just had so much ahead of him and we were just excited to see it."
Garcia, who had recently started preschool at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, was reportedly spending the weekend with his father. The school's principal, Jesse Cleaver, noted in a letter to the school community that the young boy "quickly made a meaningful impression on those around him with his kind, friendly, and respectful personality."
According to his aunt, Garcia's older brother, Gabriel, was present during the attack and attempted to intervene. "I talked to my nephew that night and he was just crying and he was screaming," Russ recalled.
The Louisa County Sheriff's Office has not yet released details regarding the owner of the dog or whether any adults were present at the time of the attack, a point that has raised concerns among local residents. The department has not responded to requests for further information.
