Tilly, a 7-year-old Tibetan spaniel, is capturing hearts online with her short spine syndrome, a rare condition that has also brought viral fame to a raccoon named Jimothy.

Tilly was adopted in 2019 by Anna Marie Gianni, who learned that the puppy was at risk of euthanasia due to her congenital anomaly. "They told me one of the puppies was deformed and they could not find her a home, which could lead to euthanization," Gianni recounted. "I had already fallen in love with her and planned out our next year together in my head before he was even done saying that awful statement."

Gianni regularly shares Tilly's daily life on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, showcasing the dog's playful nature and how she navigates her unique physical characteristics. "She was born with a syndrome, and just like humans born with a syndrome, her body has learned to adapt and she is thriving," Gianni stated.

Tilly's online presence has surged in popularity alongside Jimothy, the "mutant raccoon" from Seattle. Videos of Tilly, such as attempting to retrieve a treat or wearing a birthday hat, have circulated widely on social media.

Unlike Jimothy, who experts predict will have a short lifespan due to his condition, Tilly has experienced no chronic health issues related to her shortened spine. "She has had no health issues or complications because of her short spine, and [we] expect her to live a long, healthy life," Gianni told The Dodo. She added that she now understands the public's fascination with Tilly, echoing the sentiments expressed by those who admire Jimothy.

Short spine syndrome affects a very small percentage of animals. According to Brian Collins of the Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine, affected animals can experience complications such as organ compression and joint problems. For wild animals like Jimothy, the mutation could also impede their ability to climb or escape predators. Collins noted that animals with this syndrome tend to have better outcomes when they have consistent caretakers.

Tibetan spaniels typically grow to about 10 inches long, weigh up to 15 pounds, and have an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years, according to the American Kennel Club.
