The Seattle Mariners have embraced a local viral sensation, dedicating a theme night to Jimothy, a raccoon known for his unusual, spherical shape, likely due to a spinal condition. The initial "Jimothy Night" at T-Mobile Park on Wednesday, which featured a game against the Detroit Tigers, proved so popular that the team announced a second event for later in the week.
Fans who purchased special promotional tickets received Jimothy-themed shirts. The first 20,000 attendees were also given trading cards detailing Jimothy's "stats," including his hometown of Ballard and his "throwing hand" listed as "all fours."
The enthusiasm for Jimothy extended beyond merchandise. Many fans arrived at the stadium adorned in their own Jimothy regalia. Hannah McCausland, attending with friends, expressed her support, stating, "It was specifically to wear our Jimothy attire and support the Jimothy."
Even those who didn't anticipate the theme were caught up in the festivities. Payton Ives, who traveled from Portland, Oregon, crocheted two Jimothy figures during her drive and gifted one to Mariners pre- and postgame TV host Brad Adam.
The team's star player, Julio Rodriguez, also participated by giving his teammates Jimothy batting practice shirts. Throughout the stadium, references to the raccoon were prevalent, from an inflatable raccoon posing with the Mariner Moose to a specialty drink named the "Trashed Panda" and a "Get Loud for Jimothy" graphic on the video board. Jimothy was also featured in the stadium's "Salmon Run" race.
This fan engagement highlights how local figures and unique narratives can create a significant buzz. Aiden Karmil, who works with young children, noted that Jimothy is a popular topic among them, adding that "something that brings something from Seattle into the park" is enjoyable.
Jimothy, who typically roams the Ballard neighborhood, gained significant online attention for his distinctive appearance, which has sparked a unique connection with the local baseball fanbase and the Mariners organization.
