Viral Audio Clip of Texas Candidate Talarico Denounced as Manipulated

A viral audio recording that suggested Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico had been secretly treated at an Ohio mental health facility has been challenged by the facility itself, which issued a statement denying he ever received treatment.

The audio clip, which garnered over six million views on X, was released by pro-Trump influencer Nick Sortor. Sortor claimed the recording proved Talarico had lied about having the flu during a nearly two-week absence from the campaign trail. The recording appeared to feature a woman identifying herself as an employee of the Lindner Center of Hope in Ohio, stating that Talarico had been discharged that evening.

However, the Lindner Center of Hope issued a statement Sunday asserting, "Representative James Talarico has never received treatment from Lindner Center of Hope." Talarico himself dismissed the claim, stating on X, "I've never even been to Ohio."

The controversy has cast doubt on the authenticity and context of the recording, which was presented online as evidence of secret mental health treatment. The caller was identified as pro-Trump activist Rhein Amacher. While a 47-second excerpt was widely shared, Amacher's call logs reportedly indicate a longer conversation. According to reports, the receptionist in the longer recording repeatedly states there is no one under the name James Talarico at the facility before saying, "Looks like he was just discharged this evening, that's why I don't have it."

Amacher reportedly made the call on a Saturday evening, after Talarico had been seen in Austin, Texas, the previous day. Talarico's campaign spokesman, JT Ennis, called the allegations "a lie designed to promote a pathetic conspiracy theory," adding that Talarico had been recovering at home.

Talarico had been the subject of intense speculation and criticism from Republicans, including his opponent Ken Paxton and former President Donald Trump, regarding his absence from public view for nearly two weeks. Paxton's campaign had circulated "missing-person" posters and launched a "Tala-Freak-Out Tip Line." Trump also questioned Talarico's whereabouts on Truth Social.

Talarico's last in-person public appearance prior to his illness was on September 26. He participated virtually in a candidate forum on September 30 but did not return to in-person events until October 9 at the Austin City Limits music festival. He was also reportedly seen at a Kacey Musgraves concert on October 10.

Independent journalist Laura Bassett claimed that X owner Elon Musk had suspended an account that identified Sortor's recording as AI-generated and accused X of blocking Community Notes from appearing on Sortor's post. Musk himself weighed in on the narrative, writing on X that "The Talarico campaign is hiding something big that voters ought to know about."

The Republican campaign of Ken Paxton has remained notably silent on the episode, and did not respond to requests for comment.
