Vincent Pastore, an actor widely recognized for his portrayal of Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero in the acclaimed television series “The Sopranos,” has died at the age of 80. His death occurred at his home in the Bronx, New York, on Saturday.

Weeks prior to his passing, Pastore had celebrated his 80th birthday on July 14. His close friend and associate, Stephen Villano, described Pastore as being in good health, noting that the actor had recently undergone his annual physical examination. Villano recounted their last conversation on Thursday and expressed shock at the unexpected nature of Pastore’s death.

Villano, who described Pastore as an “amazing individual” with a deep love for his craft, highlighted his work across Broadway, film, and television. Pastore was also involved in new television projects and had plans to perform with his rock group, the “Gangster Squad,” where he sang and played the tambourine.

Pastore, a Vietnam War veteran, had a friendship with Villano that spanned approximately 30 years, originating when Villano served as Pastore's driver. Villano remembered Pastore as a generous, kind, and caring man who was dedicated to his community and charitable causes, including St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and the NYPD.

Pastore, who had previously survived prostate cancer, also supported others facing similar health challenges. According to Villano, Pastore donated his earnings from the first season of “Celebrity Apprentice” in 2008 to charity.

A police source indicated that Pastore died of natural causes. His neighbor found him deceased at his residence.

Pastore's career included roles in films such as “Carlito’s Way” and “Revolver.” His tenure on “The Sopranos” ran from 1999 to 2007.

His long-time manager, Robert Attermann, issued a statement remembering Pastore as one of the kindest and most generous people he had ever known, noting his respectful treatment of fans.

Former castmates also shared their grief. Edie Falco, who played Carmela Soprano, called his death an “awful loss” and remembered him as being “always so full of life.” Michael Imperioli, who portrayed Christopher Moltisanti, shared on Instagram that Pastore was a “kind-hearted brother who cared deeply about his family and friends.” Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who starred as Meadow Soprano, described him on social media as “a wonderful actor, a kind and loving man.”

Pastore’s last known public appearance was on June 8, 2024, when he attended the premiere of “Stevie Van Zandt: Disciple” in New York City to support his longtime friend Steven Van Zandt.
