Vincent Kompany Hospitalized After Collapsing at Bayern Training
The Bayern Munich manager was taken by ambulance after experiencing pain from a viral infection.
Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany was taken to a Munich hospital by ambulance on Friday after reportedly collapsing at the club's training ground. The 40-year-old has been dealing with a viral infection that has exacerbated old scar tissue, causing him pain and difficulty with basic movements like climbing stairs.
BILD reported that a rescue helicopter landed at the training facility. Kompany, a former captain for Manchester City, was later transported by ambulance. Sky Sports Germany confirmed the collapse occurred after Friday's training session, ahead of the team's Bundesliga match against Freiburg. His condition has been reported as stable.
Kompany himself commented on his health struggles earlier in the week. Following a Champions League draw against Arsenal on Wednesday, he stated, "I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course I didn't listen to my body, and then at some point my body said: 'Stop now!'"
He had missed training sessions and a press conference leading up to the Arsenal game but was present on the touchline. He also observed Bayern's previous match, a 6-1 victory over RB Leipzig, from the bench, but did not give post-match interviews.
Kompany moved to Munich in 2024 and has led Bayern to two Bundesliga titles. He is married to Carla, whom he met in Manchester, and they have three children. His assistant coach, Aaron Danks, had previously spoken about Kompany's health issues, noting that the virus was affecting his legs and causing pain, and emphasizing the importance of rest for the manager.
