Mulbarton Wanderers have triumphed in a controversial FA Cup replay, securing their progression to the next round. The replay was necessitated after the FA determined a refereeing mistake had been made in the initial tie between Mulbarton and Woodford.
Despite the team's eventual victory, the decision to replay the match stirred emotions within the club. "There's all the emotions, you ask questions and you're frustrated," said Danny Self, joint first team manager at Mulbarton, speaking before the game. "Whether we agree or disagree, we are where we are and we've just got to prepare for it."
Retired Premier League and FIFA referee Dan Robathan defended the original match official, acknowledging the immense pressure officials face. "There's a misconception that when we make a decision, that we don't care which is so far from the truth," Robathan stated. "It hits you quite personally and you don't want to have a negative effect on a game. But you're trying to process all that at once and I can only assume he's got confused with the law in that moment."
The village club, Mulbarton Wanderers, located south of Norwich, has seen a rapid ascent through local leagues, with this season marking their debut at step four of the non-league pyramid. They are now scheduled to face Gloucester in the next round, a match set for the weekend of Saturday, October 3.
Gloucester competes at step three of non-league football, in the Southern League Premier Division South. The winner of this upcoming tie will receive £5,625 in prize money, while the loser will take home £1,875. Even with the loss in the replay, Woodford will still collect £1,125 from the prize fund.
