Vikings Quarterback Kyler Murray Clears Concussion Protocol, Set to Start Sunday

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray has cleared concussion protocol and is slated to start Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Head coach Kevin O’Connell announced the decision Monday, confirming Murray’s return to the field after a one-week absence.

Murray sustained a concussion during the third drive of the Vikings’ season-opening victory against the Green Bay Packers. This injury forced him to enter the league’s concussion protocol, sidelining him for their Week 2 matchup against the Chicago Bears. Backup quarterback Carson Wentz started in Murray’s stead, leading the Vikings to a 9-3 win and maintaining their position atop the NFC North with two divisional victories.

Murray participated in limited practice sessions leading up to Week 2, but was ultimately ruled out for the game against the Bears. His ability to practice at all was seen as a positive sign for the team.

Now cleared, Murray is expected to travel with the team to Tampa Bay and aim to extend the Vikings' undefeated start to the season.

Throughout his NFL career, Murray has faced a history of injuries that have impacted his availability. After two healthy seasons to begin his career, he experienced intermittent injury issues. He missed three games in 2021, six in 2022, nine in 2023, and a significant 12 games in 2025 due to a foot injury.

Following their road game against the Buccaneers, the Vikings are scheduled to host the Miami Dolphins at U.S. Bank Stadium in Week 4. Their Week 5 schedule includes another road game against the New Orleans Saints.

The team will rely on Murray to return to form and lead them toward a potential postseason appearance, after failing to make the playoffs in 2025.
