Vikings' Pursuit of Kyler Murray Stemmed from J.J. McCarthy's 'Immaturity' and Accuracy Issues

Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell and his staff made the decision to pursue Kyler Murray this offseason due to unresolved issues with J.J. McCarthy's accuracy and perceived immaturity, according to an ESPN report citing team and league sources.

The report highlighted an instance during a December game against the Dallas Cowboys where McCarthy, then a first-round pick, celebrated a touchdown five yards before crossing the line of scrimmage. This occurred despite being instructed in practice not to perform such celebrations. McCarthy himself acknowledged his temptation to do it, stating, "So, just me being who I am, it’s like, ‘Oh, now I’m more enticed to do it.’"

Head coach O’Connell expressed his displeasure with the celebration at the time. These concerns about McCarthy's maturity, decision-making, and pocket presence reportedly contributed to the Vikings signing Murray to a one-year deal in March after his release from the Arizona Cardinals.

Following these developments, McCarthy was demoted to third-string quarterback just days before the Vikings' 2026 season opener against the Green Bay Packers. Murray was named the starter, with veteran Carson Wentz as the backup.

Murray suffered a concussion early in the game against the Packers and was replaced by Wentz. Wentz completed 12 of 19 passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns in the Vikings' 39-22 victory.

Earlier in the offseason, O'Connell had advocated for trading up to select Drake Maye, but the New England Patriots declined the Vikings' offer. Upon drafting McCarthy, O'Connell supported a development plan that included veteran quarterbacks, as the team initially believed McCarthy might need several years before being ready to play.

McCarthy missed his entire rookie season due to a torn meniscus sustained during the preseason. The Vikings later fired General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah in January and appointed Nolan Teasley as the new general manager on June 1.

Teasley has expressed optimism about McCarthy's future, stating his story is "not written," and O'Connell described him as "a guy that we want to pour into every single day." Despite this, O'Connell confirmed that Wentz would start against the Chicago Bears on Sunday.

Murray has participated in all practices this week, and O'Connell expects him to clear concussion protocol next week.
